Guided Discover Berlin walking tour group at Brandenburg Gate, Original Berlin Walks

Best for first-time visitors

Discover Berlin

3.5-4 hours

  • Recommended first: Covers the most ground in a single walk — the best starting point for understanding Berlin
  • See the essentials: Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate, and Checkpoint Charlie
  • Understand Berlin's story: From Prussia to Nazism, the Cold War, and reunification

How many days do you have in Berlin?

Here's how our guides would plan your walks, with afternoons left free for museums, the Reichstag dome or a beer garden.

One day in Berlin

2–4 hours on tour

Start with Discover Berlin: the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie and the story from Prussia to reunification. Only have a morning? Take the 2-hour Discover Berlin Express instead. Don't book both; their routes overlap.

Two days in Berlin

6–8 hours on tour

Day 1: Discover Berlin. Day 2: go deeper with WWII & the Third Reich, or see the divided city on the East Berlin & Berlin Wall tour, with its escape stories and life behind the Wall.

Three days or more

10+ hours on tour

Add a day trip: the Sachsenhausen Memorial with a licensed guide (groups of at most 15), or Potsdam's royal parks and Prussian palaces. Or look at a different Berlin on Street Art, Queer Berlin or Women of Berlin.

Travelling with a school group, a company or your family? A private guide can build the day around your interests, set your own pace and meet you at a central hotel. See private tours →

Before your Berlin walking tour

Are all your tours in English?

Yes. Every public tour on berlinwalks.com is guided in English. Prefer German? Our German tours are on berlinwalks.de.

Why aren't your tours free?

You pay one clear price when you book, so there's no pressure to tip at the end and our guides are paid properly for their work. Groups are capped at 25 guests per guide (15 at Sachsenhausen), and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. Why we don't offer free tours →

How much walking is involved?

Berlin is flat, but we cover ground. Discover Berlin, for example, is 4–5 km (about 3 miles) in 3.5–4 hours. Tours of 3 hours or longer include a break for the bathroom and refreshments.

What if it rains?

Tours run in all weather, so bring an umbrella or a jacket. As Berliners say, there's no bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

Do we go inside museums or the Reichstag?

No, unless the tour description says so. Your guide covers the history of each building outside, which makes a later visit far more rewarding. Private tours can include a museum visit.

Can I bring children, or join in a wheelchair?

Children are welcome, and tickets for ages 3–11 are €5 on Discover Berlin. Wheelchair users are welcome too, and Discover Berlin is the most wheelchair-friendly route. Contact us before booking so we can warn you about cobbles, construction or lifts that are out of order.

Do I need to print my ticket?

No. Show it on your phone at the meeting point. Look for a guide with a blue name badge, who arrives 15 minutes before the start.
